Two Systems
We are currently in the process of replacing our system with new equipment which has a higher speed and so at the moment we have two system operating in parallel. Either can be used by both members and visitors.
The Bay Broadband Co-operative is a 'not for profit' Social Enterprise Co-operative, set up originally to bring High Speed Broadband to our rural village which had no other means of Broadband connection.
Although a large number of properties in the area now have access to regular ADSL broadband, many of the outlying farms and houses still have severely limited or no access due to the distance from the exchange. With over 100 regular users we are able to offer a high speed and economical wireless Internet access throughout most of Robin Hood's Bay, Fylingthorpe and the surrounding farms to both residents and visitors.

We have six main gateways (these are our connections to the internet) two mainly serving the top of Bay, one for the lower part of Bay, two covering Fylingthorpe, and one for the outlying farms in the south of our area and the Flask. These feed about 20 Access points on our new system and a further 9 on our older system.
Any wireless enabled PC within range of one of these aerials is able to connect to the internet through our system. However, with the rough terrain of the area and the thick stone walls of some of the cottages, it is sometimes necessary to install better aerials either on the window or externally.
Most modern laptops now contain a wireless card and so it is easy to connect. Following the normal method to find available wireless connections should list RHBMesh, it is then a simple matter to select connect. Having done this, open your web browser and on trying to access most pages, you should be re-directed to a ‘splash page’ which will ask for a user name and password. These can be obtained by following the instructions, or following these links..

Many residents can now connect as above. However, we prefer to use a different method of authentication which removes the need to log in regularly. There is also a large choice of wireless aerials which can give superior performance to the ones built into laptop computers. On registering interest in joining, a member of our team of volunteers can visit your location and undertake a site survey to advise on the equipment which will give the optimum performance.
